The Legacy Continues

Breath of Life was founded in 1974 by Walter Arties, with Charles D. Brooks serving as the original speaker from 1975 through 1998. Brooks retired in 1998, recommending Walter L. Pearson, Jr., as his replacement. Pearson has been the speaker for the broadcast since 1998, and has focused heavily on public evangelism. In 2004, Pearson was the speaker for Breath of Life's first live broadcast evangelistic series, Experience the Power. This series was uplinked via satellite to hundreds of churches across North America and around the world.

Breath of Life is no longer an independent ministry, but is an official media ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They have offices in the Adventist Media Center in California, and in the office of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists located in Silver Spring, MD.

In 2010, Dr. Carlton P. Byrd, senior pastor of the Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church in Atlanta, Ga., became the Speaker/Director for Breath of Life Ministeries. Live broadcasts featuring Dr. Byrd were filmed at his church in October, and began airing in January of 2011.

About Breath of Life Ministries

The Breath of Life Church of Seattle, Washington

Washington State Convention CenterBreath of Life Seventh-day Adventist Church was born out of the inspiration of the Washington Conference Church Planting Committee under the direction of Pastor Byron Dulan more than twenty years ago. The decision was made to sponsor a major city-wide evangelistic crusade through the Breath of Life Ministries then headed by C.D. Brooks. The crusade was held at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle and ran from August 15, 1992 to September 12, 1992. Over 100 souls committed to baptism.

Elder Harold Goodloe, then associate pastor of Emerald City Community SDA Church, with his wife Debra, was selected as the pastoral couple for the new company birth from the harvest of the crusade. On September 19, 1992 the Breath of Life Company opened its doors for its first Sabbath service. Under Pastor Goodloe’s leadership with Elder James Buckins as its first Head Elder and a body of 55 charter members.

In the intervening years since then, the Lord has nurtured and sustained the church through challenge and triumph. It has been subsequently shepherded by Pastor Alonzo Wagner III, Pastor Nigel David and Pastor Wally Lyder.
Originally envisioned as a church of low liturgy and high praise, music has been an integral part of its existence. Its first head musician was Darryl Liggett. A few years later, this role was taken over by its current head musician Paul Thomas. Working tirelessly with our choirs and praise teams, they, along with various accompanying musicians, have selflessly blessed countless worship services with their God-given talents.

The church rented space for services its first five years and bought its first property in South Seattle in 1996. Six years later, the church moved to its current location in West Seattle.
In good times and bad times, joy and sorrow, always keeping its “Eyes on the Prize”, the leadership and members of Breath of Life have persevered. God has always been its ever-present help and sustainer and by His grace “WE SHALL REMAIN”.
